On Friday August 19th, 2011, Matthews NC area orthodontist, Dr. Richard E. Graham and his assistant, Haley Whittemore, volunteered for NC Mission of Mercy-MOM, a two day free dental clinic which is sponsored by the N.C. Dental Society and is held at the Charlotte Convention Center. Only the second year held, the event attracted over 2,100 people in need some waiting eight hours to be seen by a dental professional.

According to the Charlotte observer; “ More than 1.3 million adults in North Carolina don't have medical insurance and national estimates by the federal government suggest that three times as many people may not have dental insurance and the problem has gotten worse in the tough economy as people lose their jobs and health insurance”.

Having an income of less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level qualifies a needy Charlotte area resident to be seen free of charge for dental services at NC Mission of Mercy events.
